About this expansion
Mystery of the Abbey: The Pilgrims’ Chronicles is a 12-card expansion for Mystery of the Abbey, designed for 3–6 players and a 120-minute playing time. Published for the Essen 2005 Fair, it adds new Scriptorium, Bibliotheca, and Event cards to bring additional intrigue and fun to the game.
The expansion includes five Scriptorium cards. Theological Controversy lets players ask questions of all the monks in a room rather than just one, while Liturgy of the Hours gives a player control over the order in which cards are passed during Mass. Acts of the Holy Apostles, Impure Illuminations, and Blasphemous Treatise complete this group.
Six Event cards introduce new developments to the investigation and the Abbey. Tempus Fugit! increases the pace of the game by allowing players to move three steps, with only three turns between each Mass. A New Corpse and Another New Corpse each add an additional body, while Tentative Escape gives the culprit a chance to escape from the Abbey and end the game prematurely.
- Catechism
- Spring Fair
- Calumnious Denunciation, a Bibliotheca card that lets you secretly name a suspect and immediately score 4 points if another player later accuses that suspect, but the suspect proves innocent
To use The Pilgrims’ Chronicles, simply shuffle its Scriptorium, Bibliotheca, and Event cards into their respective draw piles before the start of the game. The result is a compact addition that introduces new ways to question, move, score, and change the course of the mystery.
