About this expansion
1867: The Railways of Canada is an 18xx railway game for 3–6 players, with a playing time of approximately 360 minutes. Set in the central part of Canada, it focuses on the southern regions of Ontario and Quebec.
Originally released as an expansion to 1861: Railways of the Russian Empire, 1867 is essentially “1861 on a new map.” In 2017, this Canadian setting was released as a stand-alone game, giving players a dedicated version of the experience.
The game introduces notable changes to the systems associated with its predecessor. Minor companies do not have fixed starting positions. Instead, when a minor company is put up for auction, the player chooses its starting position, adding flexibility to the way the game develops from the outset.
- Canadian setting: Build across the southern parts of Ontario and Quebec.
- Flexible minor companies: Choose a minor company’s starting position when it goes to auction.
- Distinctive State Railway: It takes the next new train each round rather than running its trains and saving for another.
The State Railway’s revised train procedure speeds up the game somewhat compared with 1861 and also accelerates the trains. These changes give 1867 its own pace while preserving its connection to the earlier game.
With its Canadian map, auction-based minor-company placement, and streamlined State Railway progression, 1867: The Railways of Canada offers a substantial 18xx experience for groups of three to six players.
