About this expansion
OVERLORD: D-Day and the Beachhead Battles is a 2–4-player expansion module for The Killing Ground: Campaign for Normandy, July-August 1944, covering June 6 to July 5, 1944, with an approximate play time of 2160 minutes.
This 30-game-turn module adds a map, playing pieces, and rules for the D-Day landings and the battles that followed. It can also be played as a single-map, standalone game format, although the original The Killing Ground game is required to use the module.
The campaign unfolds in three stages, each with its own sequence of play:
- D-Day: June 6, 1944, using a special sequence only on the first game turn.
- OVERLORD: The Build-up: beginning on turn two and continuing until both Allied nationalities have completed their depots.
- The Killing Ground: beginning on the turn after the depots are completed and using the original campaign sequence.
D-Day and Build-up rules supplement and supersede the standard rules during the early stages, while the original The Killing Ground rules remain in use throughout the Build-up except where specifically changed. Most units represent regiments, while armor and other assets are represented by battalions.
The expansion includes a two-sided north map section, 280 back-printed die-cut counters, rules booklets, a turn record track, sequence cards, charts and tables, setup information, a combat manual, replacement-counter guidance, and a CRT card. Turns represent one day, and each hex covers 2.5 kilometers. Released in 2007, OVERLORD provides a detailed extension for players who want to connect the opening Normandy battles with the wider campaign.
