About this expansion
Attila: Scourge of Rome is a two-player historical battle game with an approximately 240-minute playing time, covering two major engagements fought by the Hunnic Confederation against Rome.
The game presents The Utus in Moesia II in 447 AD, pitting Attila’s Huns against Eastern Rome under Arnegisclus. It also covers The Catalaunian Fields in Gaul in 451 AD, where Attila faces Aetius, Western Rome, and the Visigoths. Players can command the Huns at their peak in the earlier battle or use their somewhat reduced ability in the later engagement against a different Roman army.
The module includes 140 full-color counters representing the Huns and other notable forces, including Visigoths, Alans, Burgundians, Franks, Saxons, and Gepids. Roman forces receive the Cheiroballistra artillery, while the game’s full-size map supports both battles.
- Two major Attila-era battles: The Utus and The Catalaunian Fields
- 140 full-color counters and a 22×34-inch full-color mapsheet
- Special rules for feigned retreat, defections, and barbarian impetuosity
- Revised Cataphract rules, including changes to size ratings and composite-bow missile fire
- Simple Great Battles of History versions of both battles
Attila: Scourge of Rome introduces rules reflecting the distinctive steppe warfare practiced by the nomadic Huns, alongside updated treatment of cataphracts and composite bows based on the latest research cited by the source description. The 16-page rules and scenario book explains the battles and their special systems.
This module requires a copy of Cataphract to play. It was designed by Mark Herman and Richard Berg, with map art by Mark Simonitch and counter art by Mark Simonitch and Rodger B. MacGowan.
