About this expansion
Turning Point: Stalingrad – Expansion Kit is a 216-counter expansion for 1–2 players, with a listed play time of 1800 minutes. Released in 1989, it extends the base game’s coverage of the German offensive at Stalingrad.
The kit consists entirely of additional counters: 96 counters measuring 3/4 inch and 120 counters measuring 1/2 inch. The rules for using the expansion were printed in the rulebook included with the base game, a decision that led some consumers to believe that part of the game had been omitted.
With the expansion, the extended game reaches November 14, compared with October 3 in the base game. This adds more of the campaign to the experience, but it does not cover the entire battle.
- 216 counters in total
- 96 counters at 3/4 inch
- 120 counters at 1/2 inch
- Extended endpoint of November 14
A common misunderstanding is that this extension allows play through to the end of the Battle of Stalingrad. In fact, its endpoint still falls roughly a week before the Soviet counteroffensive historically began to encircle the German 6th Army at Stalingrad.
Accordingly, Turning Point: Stalingrad – Expansion Kit should be understood as a broader version of the German offensive portion of the game, rather than a complete continuation through the battle’s conclusion. It adds more counters and a later endpoint while remaining focused on the same phase of the conflict.
