About this expansion

VolgaFront: East of EastFront 1942-43 is a two-player folio add-on for EastFront: The War in Russia, 1941-45, with an approximately 240-minute play time. It extends the Russian map eastward, presenting additional strategic possibilities in Germany’s war against the Soviet Union.

The expansion includes an eastern map extension, an additional EastFront rulebook, and new scenarios designed to use the extended map directly. The base game, EastFront: The War in Russia, 1941-45, is required to play with the VolgaFront map.

VolgaFront uses Columbia Games’ distinctive Block system. Instead of traditional counters, units are represented by wooden blocks that stand upright, with their details visible only on one side. This creates a built-in fog of war: opponents cannot identify a block’s unit type or current strength unless they remember what they have seen.

Blocks also track changing unit strength. Rotating a block places its current strength at the top, allowing four strength steps rather than the two sides typically available to a counter. The system adds detail without requiring extra layers of bookkeeping, supporting engaging war-game sessions that remain relatively short compared with the depth they offer.

VolgaFront is also part of the EuroFront series. The second edition of EastFront includes most of the VolgaFront map, but not its scenarios, while EuroFront: War in Europe, 1939-45 expands the series.
