About this expansion

New York 1901: Goons of New York is a promotional expansion for 2–4 players that adds five Boss cards and new territory-based powers to New York 1901.

Once every player has reached the Silver Age, determine who controls the most territory of each color on the game board. The player with the most territory in a color takes control of that color’s Boss, while pink is excluded from this check in a two-player game.

At the start of each subsequent turn, a player can use the goon power of one of their Bosses. Each power allows a goon to be placed in a particular location, such as a street or a specific Bronze Age skyscraper. These goons can score points according to the conditions associated with their placement.

  • Five new Boss cards with special powers
  • Territory control determines who commands each Boss
  • Goon placement creates additional scoring opportunities
  • Boss ownership can change during the game

Control of a Boss is not permanent. If another player gains control of more territory in that color, they take the Boss, and the former owner must say goodbye to the goons connected to it. This makes territory totals especially important even after the Silver Age has been reached.

Goons of New York was created with the Brooklyn Game Lab, an afterschool program where children learn modern board games and discuss their strategies and tactics. Hundreds of children collaborated during a month-long game jam to design and playtest this promotional content for New York 1901. Released in 2016, it was planned to be available solely at trade shows and game conventions.
