About this expansion
Saboteur: Rock Gold is a 2014 game for 3–10 players that takes about 30 minutes to play. It adds three Rock Gold cards, giving players another way to win valuable Gold points during each round.
At the start of a round, after the Miner cards are distributed, the player to the right of the Start player chooses one Rock Gold card and places it face up on an empty spot between the Start card and the Destination cards. The card cannot be placed adjacent to either type of card, and it remains there until the round ends.
Players compete to establish an uninterrupted path from the Start card to the Rock Gold card. The first player to complete that connection takes the Gold points shown on the card. In Saboteur, the points are represented by a Gold point card; in Saboteur 2, they are represented by a token. The player keeps the card or token visible in front of them.
After securing the Rock Gold points, the player must decide how to proceed. They can announce during their turn that they quit the round, play no more cards, keep their role hidden, and gain only the Rock Gold points. Alternatively, they can continue playing and try to win the round for their team.
- Quit the round: Keep the Rock Gold points, but gain no additional Gold.
- Continue playing: If the team wins, keep the Rock Gold points and receive the team’s share of the Gold.
- If the team loses: Receive no Gold and return the acquired Rock Gold points to the reserve.
Saboteur: Rock Gold therefore adds a clear risk-and-reward choice to the round: secure a guaranteed reward, or keep playing for a larger potential payoff.
