About this expansion

Civilization: The Expansion Project is a strategy game for 2–18 players, with games lasting approximately 360 minutes. It covers almost 8,000 years of ancient history, from the invention of agriculture to the emergence of Rome as the dominant Mediterranean power.

Each player leads an ancient civilization, such as the Illyrians or Babylonians, guiding its people across a map that stretches from the Mediterranean to India. Expand your empire, use its proceeds to fund new technologies, and develop the tools needed to meet the challenges of each era.

Advancements such as Literacy, Metalworking, and Law help civilizations address their problems while opening the way to further progress. The goal is not simply conquest, but achieving an overall balance of cultural, economic, political, and religious development.

  • Redesigned, extended map with varied locations for each game
  • More civilization advancements than in Advanced Civilization
  • Support for up to 18 players
  • New victory point system and improved timeline

Although battles and territorial strategy matter, conflicts generally arise from rivalries and shortages of land rather than attempts to eliminate opponents. Nomads, farmers, warriors, merchants, artisans, priests, and citizens each contribute to the growth of a nation.

Civilization: The Expansion Project adds greater geographic scope, more advancement options, and increased flexibility to the Civilization system. The player who best balances the competing needs of their society will achieve the strongest overall civilization and win.
