About this expansion
Canyon: Grand Canyon is a 1999 expansion for 3–6 players that adds special cards, floating obstacle tiles, and rapids tiles to the Canyon game.
The expansion changes the normal flow of play with eight special cards. These cards can alter card draws, suit-following rules, movement, bids, and the position of canoes on the board, creating new possibilities during each hand.
- Changing Horse: Discard two cards before a hand and draw two replacements.
- Crazy Color: Choose not to follow suit once during the hand.
- Grüner Span: Hop over boats ahead of your player, Checkers-style.
- Mad Move: Change the number of cards drawn for the hand.
- Manitou: Discard another player’s Grand Canyon card, or move 1–2 spaces whether or not you make your bid.
- Pushing Bull: Push one canoe in your path one space in any direction.
- White Wind: Miss your bid by one less and still receive the movement bonus.
- Wooden Heart: Place the floating obstacle tiles after everyone else has chosen a Grand Canyon card.
Six floating obstacle tiles add board obstacles, while six special rapids tiles create a unique waterfall. Together, these components introduce new board features alongside the expansion’s powerful card effects.
With its mix of altered hand rules, unexpected movement options, canoe pushing, and changing board conditions, Canyon: Grand Canyon offers a distinct way to experience the original game. The expansion’s cards and tiles provide multiple ways to disrupt or reshape play while preserving the focus on hands, bids, and movement.
