About this board game

1793: Patriots & Traitors is a 1–5 player historical strategy game with an approximately 120-minute play time, set during the chaos of the French Revolution.

From the fall of the monarchy in August 1792 through July 1794, rival political factions struggle to shape France’s future. You may stand as a radical, moderate, or conservative, pursuing your own faction’s agenda while trying to survive the upheaval around you.

Although the players are rivals, they must work together to stop the armies of Austria, Prussia, and Sardinia-Piedmont from reaching Paris. If the invading armies succeed, the Revolution is crushed and the game ends prematurely. Meanwhile, bread shortages, hostile accusations in the press, and unrest in the streets add to the pressure.

  • Asymmetrical faction play: Each faction has its own agenda and perspective on the Revolution.
  • Multifunctional action cards: Influence the National Convention, Palais-Égalité, the Paris streets, and the provinces.
  • Political upheaval: Controlled areas provide benefits and can help trigger a Coup d’État or Civil War.
  • Endangered leaders: Robespierre, Marat, Dumouriez, and other activated leader cards can advance your faction’s goals—unless they are arrested or assassinated.

Every decision contributes to a volatile revolutionary sandbox where cooperation is necessary but trust is fragile. The factions’ competing goals, shifting influence, and threats from within and beyond France create a highly thematic contest.

Fresh, asymmetrical, and built for replayability, 1793: Patriots & Traitors challenges you to lead the Revolution—or simply remain alive when it ends.
