About this board game

1812: The Campaign of Napoleon in Russia is a two-player simulation of Napoleon’s invasion of Russia between June and December 1812, released in 1972. It explores the strategic maneuver and tactical decisions that shaped a campaign whose defeat contributed to the collapse of the French Empire.

The game includes three scenarios covering different stages of the campaign. The first begins in June, with the opposing forces deployed and ready to advance. The second starts in August, as Napoleon is deep inside Russia and preparing his final drive to Moscow. The third opens in October, with Napoleon in Moscow and the epic winter retreat about to begin as Russian armies converge.

Two separate versions are included, each using a map covering most of Russia. The Area Version divides the map into geographical Areas and Sub-areas, using an area-driven strategic system. Areas have equal supply capacity, while Sub-areas represent roughly comparable distances for movement and combat.

The Grand Tactical Version uses hex mechanics across the same broad scope. Its combat system is designed to represent major factors in Napoleonic battles without excessive quantification or simplification, while distinctive supply rules reflect the crucial role of logistics in movement and combat decisions.

  • Three scenarios spanning June to December 1812
  • Area-based and hex-based versions with separate maps

With its two approaches to the same historical campaign, 1812: The Campaign of Napoleon in Russia presents the invasion, advance toward Moscow, and winter retreat through distinct strategic and tactical frameworks.
