About this board game
1812: The Cradle of Steam Railways is a medium-length 18xx railway investment and operations game for 2–4 players, with a listed play time of 180 minutes. Set in North-East England during the 19th century, it places each player in the role of an investor in railway companies.
Players begin by spending their initial capital to buy wholly owned Private and Minor Companies. Later, they can buy shares in Public Companies, each controlled by its largest shareholder, known as its Director. Building a successful railway portfolio requires attention to both company operations and ownership.
- Buy Private and Minor Companies with initial capital.
- Purchase shares in Public Companies and become their Director by holding the largest shareholding.
- Build track and run Trains to generate company revenues.
- Pay Public Company revenues as dividends or retain them to fund additional track and Trains.
A defining feature of 1812 is the tension between a Public Company’s Director and its shareholders. Their interests are not always identical, so minority shareholders need to consider their investments carefully. Decisions about revenues, dividends, and retained funds can affect both the company and the investors connected to it.
As part of the 18xx series, 1812 follows the tradition established by Francis Tresham’s 1829. The game offers a focused railway setting and a medium-length experience: experienced, brisk players may finish in about three hours, while novices or more deliberate groups might take a few additional hours. Released in 2011, 1812: The Cradle of Steam Railways brings railway construction, train operations, and shareholder decisions together in one investment-driven game.
