About this board game
1822CA is an 18xx railway investment and operations game for 3–7 players, with games lasting about 540 minutes. Set across Canada from coast to coast, it reimplements the 1822 system with a board 33 percent larger than 1822.
Players alternate between stock rounds and operating rounds. As investors, they buy and sell shares in railway companies; the player holding the most shares in a company becomes its director and makes its decisions during operating rounds.
As company directors, players decide how their railways develop and perform. They can build track, place station tokens, select routes for trains, choose whether to pay or withhold dividends, and invest in additional trains.
- 30 private companies and 30 minor companies
- 10 public companies, including Canadian Pacific Railway
- Canadian Pacific Railway begins on both the eastern and western sides of the board
- One operating round initially separates each stock round; after the first 2-train is bought, this becomes two operating rounds
- The final set of operating rounds contains three rounds
The game can end when the first stock round concludes with nothing sold, when a company reaches the stock market’s game-end value, or when the bank runs out of money under the stated end-game timing rules. If the bank breaks during an operating round, the current pair of operating rounds is completed before one additional operating round is played.
At the end of 1822CA, each player totals cash and the current value of their stock. Open concession certificates still held by players count at face value, while private company certificates and company assets count for nothing. The richest player wins.
