About this board game
1831 is a large-scale 18xx railroading game for 3–10 players, with an approximate play time of 600 minutes. First released in 1996, it combines the spirit of the original Robber Barons with an expansive map and a broad range of railway possibilities.
The game features 30 railroads, hundreds of freight and passenger stations, and nine different train sizes. Its map accurately reflects real terrain, adding a distinctive geographical foundation to the railroading experience.
1831 brings together several key elements of railway finance and operation, including:
- Common and preferred stock
- Hostile takeovers
- Passenger and cargo routes
- Freight and passenger stations
- Nine different sizes of trains
With its combination of rail networks, stock mechanisms, routes, and terrain, 1831 stands among the three largest 18xx games. The other two identified in this group are 18C2C: Manifest Destiny and 18OE: On the Rails of the Orient Express.
The original edition is notably scarce: only 26 copies exist, individually lettered from A through Z. 1831 was republished in 2014 by All-Aboard Games, making this ambitious railway title available in a later edition while preserving its place among the largest games in the 18xx tradition.
