About this board game
1858: The Railways of Iberia is a mid-size 18xx board game for 3–6 players, with sessions lasting about 240 minutes, set in Spain and Portugal.
Players develop railway companies through alternating stock rounds and operating rounds. In stock rounds, private companies are auctioned while shares in public companies are exchanged or bought, creating a market shaped by changing opportunities.
The game features 22 private companies. These companies build track and are exchanged for shares in public companies, linking the private-company auctions to the wider share system. Public companies use either five-share or ten-share structures.
- Two gauges of track
- Four types of train
- Two-stage train obsolescence
- Track laying, upgrades, and station markers
- Share issuing and redemption involving the bank pool
During operating rounds, companies lay or upgrade track, place station markers, and earn revenues. They can also buy new trains or purchase trains from other companies, while issuing or redeeming shares to and from the bank pool.
As 1858: The Railways of Iberia progresses, new train types allow better track to be laid and gradually phase out older trains. The two-stage obsolescence system makes train management an important part of planning as the railway landscape develops.
The game ends when the bank runs out of money. Victory goes to the player with the greatest total wealth, combining cash with share values.
