About this expansion
1860: Locomotives of the Isle of Wight is a set of 48 replacement trains for 1860: Railways on the Isle of Wight, designed for 2–4 players and approximately 240 minutes of play. Released in 2015, it represents the vast majority of trains that actually ran on the island.
Instead of the original game’s numbered trains, this set uses trains arranged in lettered bands. Each band includes variations based on the original trains, creating a broader range of possibilities as the game develops. The earliest trains are 2+0s rather than 2+1s, although they cost less.
- 48 replacement trains covering lettered bands from A through H
- Train variations with different costs and performance from the norm
- Some trains rust earlier, while others rust later
- Later trains in bands D–H operate somewhat differently from the originals
Some trains are better than the standard version and cost more, while others introduce slightly unusual historical twists. The number of trains used during play will broadly match the standard game, with one or two possible exceptions.
Players can choose how trains enter the game. In one approach, players select which train from the current band to buy from the bank. Alternatively, trains can become available in a strict order, creating moments of possible frustration or delight as the desired locomotive appears—or does not.
With its historically based train roster and configurable availability, 1860: Locomotives of the Isle of Wight provides a distinct replacement set for players seeking a different take on the trains in the standard game.
