About this board game
1867: The Railways of Canada is an 18xx investment and railway operations game for 3–6 players, with a listed play time of 360 minutes. Released in 2017, it maps the southern parts of Ontario and Quebec in central Canada.
As part of the 18xx family, the game combines investment decisions with railway operations. Its design takes many features from 1861: Railways of the Russian Empire, while introducing new features of its own.
One major change is the way minor companies enter the game. Their positions are not fixed: when a minor company is put up for auction, you choose its starting position. This creates a flexible opening for the companies and distinguishes 1867 from games with predetermined minor-company locations.
- Flexible minor companies: Choose a starting position when putting a minor company up for auction.
- State Railway: It does not run its trains and save for another; instead, it takes the next new train each round.
- Accelerated train progression: The State Railway rule speeds up the game compared with 1861 and accelerates the trains somewhat.
These changes give 1867: The Railways of Canada its own identity while retaining its connection to the broader 18xx tradition. The game was originally released under this title and is now available as a complete stand-alone game.
