About this board game

1914: Serbien Muss Sterbien is a two-player World War One campaign game with an approximate 360-minute playing time, covering the battles fought in and around Serbia during 1914.

The game examines the initial campaigns on the Balkan Front, from the Austro-Hungarian invasion in August through exhaustion and stalemate in December. Its comprehensively researched order of battle and detailed map are designed to make the campaign and the geography of the theater accessible while providing an enjoyable historical gaming experience.

The map covers the primary theater of war from Peterwardein in the north and Sarajevo in the west to Niš in the south-east. At a scale of 1:500,000, each hex represents approximately 8 kilometers across, or roughly 6,475 hectares (16,000 acres).

  • Three scenarios: two short scenarios and a Grand Campaign scenario spanning the 1914 campaign.
  • Detailed scale: combat units are primarily divisions and brigades, while each turn represents two to four days depending on the season.
  • Established system: the game uses the system found in 1914: Offensive à outrance from GMT.

A concise, well-written, and organized 24-page rules booklet supports the game. The result is a focused model of a fascinating campaign, offering WWI enthusiasts a researched treatment of the Serbian theater and giving experienced players a substantial historical game to explore.

Released in 2015, 1914: Serbien Muss Sterbien combines a detailed geographic setting, accurate forces, and multiple scenarios for examining the first year of World War One on the Balkan Front.
