About this board game

1972: The Lost Phantom is a 90-minute solitaire map-making survival game for one player, placing you in the role of an American F-4 pilot shot down behind enemy lines during the Vietnam War.

Wounded and disoriented, you must make your way to safety before the North Vietnamese Army captures you. Based on a true story, the game focuses on a realistic immersion into the narrative of being shot down and struggling to survive.

As you play, you create a map while facing the challenge of navigating an unfamiliar environment. The experience is designed for a single player and offers a focused, narrative-driven form of tabletop survival play rather than a large, component-heavy production.

  • Players: 1
  • Play time: 90 minutes
  • Format: Free print-and-play
  • Components: One disposable player sheet and five pages of rules

Setup takes only 10–30 seconds, making it easy to begin a tense solo scenario quickly. The game is the third entry in the xx72 line of one-page micro games, and its inspirations include B-17: Queen of the Skies and Source of the Nile.

Released in 2017, 1972: The Lost Phantom won second place for Best Tactical Scale Game and second place for Best Short/Quick/Small Game in the 2016–2017 Wargame PnP Contest. Its compact rules and disposable sheet support a deliberately lean, low-ink presentation for players seeking an immersive solo wartime survival experience.
