About this board game
A Greater Victory: South Mountain, September 14, 1862 is a tactical, regimental-scale wargame for 1–2 players with an approximately 480-minute play time. It simulates the key fighting at Fox’s and Turner’s Gaps during the American Civil War, as Union forces sought to break through rugged terrain and Confederate defenders struggled to delay them.
Following the Union defeat at Second Manassas, Robert E. Lee’s army entered Maryland, while George B. McClellan returned to command the Union forces. At South Mountain, the Confederates needed to protect vital lines of communication and hold back the larger Union Army long enough for Stonewall Jackson’s Corps to force the surrender of more than 12,000 Federals at nearby Harper’s Ferry.
The game uses the chit-pull system featured throughout Revolution Games’ Blinds Swords series. Two quick-play scenarios focus on smaller actions, while a comprehensive scenario covers the full day of fighting. The design also supports solitaire play, offering flexible and tense situations for both sides.
- Brigade Activation cards help players gauge the status of their formations.
- Customized Fog-of-War tables add a distinct historical narrative to each scenario.
- Adjusted series rules reflect the extreme harshness of South Mountain’s terrain.
- A researched order of battle accounts for details such as Confederate stragglers.
Will D. H. Hill hold his scattered and understrength formations until reinforcements arrive, or can Union commanders such as Jacob Cox and George Meade coordinate effective attacks through the unforgiving landscape? In A Greater Victory, the outcome at South Mountain may shape the conditions for the Battle of Antietam just three days later.
