About this board game
A las Barricadas! is a two-player tactical wargame about the Spanish Civil War, with sessions lasting around 120 minutes. As the first title in the War Storms series, it recreates battles fought across the different fronts of the conflict at platoon and company level.
The game reflects the sharply contrasting forces that faced one another after the failed military coup of July 1936. The Republican side combined a limited number of professional soldiers with political and labor-movement militias, International Brigades, and other motivated but often poorly coordinated formations.
Opposing them was Franco’s army, which included much of the professional military, Carlist and fascist militias, native Moroccan troops, and volunteers from the Condor Legion and the Corpo Truppe Volontarie sent by Hitler and Mussolini. This historical setting highlights the political and social tensions that shaped the war.
Its rules focus on the tactical simulation of combat involving several key elements of modern warfare:
- Armored vehicles
- Infantry
- Artillery
- Aircraft and air superiority
The Spanish Civil War presaged the wider conflict that soon followed, serving as a testing ground for armored tactics, motorized armies, weapons, and the emerging concept of lightning war. In A las Barricadas!, these elements combine into a game designed to portray the conflict’s distinctive military challenges while also offering a framework suited to almost any 20th-century armed conflict as it actually happened.
