About this board game

A Week in Hell: The Battle of Hue is a solitaire platoon-level wargame for one player, with an approximate play time of 240 minutes. It retraces the fighting of five USMC companies as they attempt to liberate downtown Hue between January 31 and February 6, 1968.

The game places you in command of Marines working to take control of almost the entire map and rendezvous with units entrenched at its northern edge. Your forces begin the game off-board, creating a campaign that unfolds across seven turns, with each turn representing one day of fighting.

Every turn is divided into 10 phases. Units must choose between fighting and moving, making each action part of the larger effort to advance through the city and establish control of the battlefield.

  • Solitaire wargame for one player
  • Platoon-level combat
  • Seven turns representing seven days of fighting
  • Ten phases in each turn
  • USMC companies fighting to liberate downtown Hue

A distinctive rule governs what happens after combat. When a unit defeats an enemy unit, it must remain in the same spot for one turn to mop up, adding another consideration to the pace of your advance.

With its focused historical setting, structured daily turns, and emphasis on movement, combat, and clearing conquered positions, A Week in Hell presents the battle as a concentrated solo experience. Guide the Marines from their off-board starting positions toward control of Hue and the rendezvous at the northern edge of the map.
