About this expansion
Abalone Extra Player Marbles expands the classic two-player game for 3–6 players, with play lasting around 20 minutes. Released in 1988, it adds extra sets of marbles so Abalone can accommodate more players and new ways to play.
In the three-player version, each player uses 11 pieces. Adding a fourth color creates a four-player team variant, with players forming two teams and starting with 9 marbles each.
- 3 players: 11 marbles per player
- 4 players: two teams, with 9 marbles per player
- 5 players: four edge players start with 8 marbles, while the center player starts with 7
- 6 players: three teams, with 6 marbles per player
The five-player setup accounts for the center position by giving that player fewer starting marbles. The result is an unusual variant designed around the advantageous start position in the middle of the board.
With a sixth color, six players can compete in three teams, each controlling 6 marbles. Beyond these player-count variants, the extra marbles also enable numerous other variations of Abalone.
For groups that want to bring more players to the table, Abalone Extra Player Marbles offers a straightforward way to extend the game beyond its standard two-player format. Its range of setups supports individual play, team arrangements, and distinctive starting positions while preserving the central role of marble-based play.
