About this board game
Air & Armor: Würzburg, Tactical Armored Warfare in Europe – Designer Signature Edition is a high-complexity grand tactical wargame for 1–7 players, with scenarios lasting approximately 3 to 12 hours.
Set during a hypothetical Soviet attack on West Germany in the mid-1980s, the game depicts battles around Würzburg between the Soviet 8th Guards Army and elements of the U.S. 3rd Infantry Division and West German 12th Panzer Division. Its scale is expansive, with turns representing two hours, a map scale of one mile per hex, and units ranging from companies to regiments.
Air & Armor uses an asymmetric command and control system to reflect the different capabilities of each alliance. Reconnaissance, combined-arms operations, air and helicopter strikes, artillery, chemical and electronic warfare, and combat engineering all contribute to the struggle for battlefield advantage.
Multiple layers of hidden intelligence create a powerful fog of war. Deception, surprise, traps, and ambushes can shape every operation, while the same hidden-information system makes the game particularly well suited to solitaire play—even when one player commands both sides.
- Meeting engagements and delaying actions
- Frontal assaults and attacks on fortified lines
- Flank attacks and major river crossings
- NATO counterattacks and envelopment operations
- Breakouts from a pocket
The twelve scenarios are each complete games, offering varied battlefield operations and challenges. Updated orders of battle, new map artwork, new counters, revised rules, and new scenarios support this Designer Signature Edition, while extensive scenario, player, and designer notes add play guidance and historical detail.
