About this board game

Akron is a two-player, three-dimensional connection game played in about 30 minutes. Released in 2002, it extends the ideas of games such as Hex, Y, and Unlur into a spatial setting.

Players place balls in two different colours on a square grid. Each player seeks to connect the board sides assigned to their colour, creating a visibly connected chain of matching pieces. The goal is familiar to connection-game fans, but Akron adds height and movement to the challenge.

The game’s three-dimensional mechanism comes from 2×2 platforms formed by four balls already in play. Balls can be elevated onto these platforms, allowing connections to develop above the main level of the board. This gives the position a vertical dimension rather than limiting play to a flat grid.

  • Two players compete with balls in two colours.
  • Connections are built across a square grid and upward onto 2×2 platforms.
  • Moves can cause balls to drop, changing existing connections.
  • Each player aims to join the board sides of their colour with a continuous visible chain.

The dropping mechanism is a distinctive twist. A move does not simply add to the structure: it can also make balls fall, potentially changing how the pieces connect on the board. As a result, the current shape can shift while players work toward their own link.

With its combination of connection-game fundamentals, elevation, and falling balls, Akron presents a compact abstract contest in three dimensions. It is a focused choice for two players looking for a fresh variation on familiar connection principles.
