About this board game

Alea Iacta Est is a dice-placement board game for 2–5 players, with games lasting about 60 minutes. Players take the role of Caesar and compete to earn the most prestige points through clever placement of eight dice across five Roman buildings.

Each building offers a different path to advantage. At the Castrum, players can conquer new provinces. The Forum Romanum provides patricians who can later be sent to those provinces, while the Senatus awards cards that remain secret until the end of the game.

  • Templum: Receive prestige points directly from the Goddess Fortuna.
  • Latrina: Dice that do not win another building provide a “repete!” chip.
  • Repete! chips: Use them to re-roll dice, or trade them two-for-one for prestige points at the end.

Every building has its own rules for placing dice, creating tactical possibilities with every roll. Players must decide when to commit dice, pursue provinces and patricians, seek hidden bonuses, or accept a chip for later use.

A round ends as soon as one player places their final die. The game lasts five rounds, or six rounds with 2–3 players. At the conclusion, patricians are organized in their provinces, Senate cards are revealed, and all prestige points are totaled.

With several competing ways to score and special placement rules shaping every decision, Alea Iacta Est turns each roll into a contest for Roman influence. The player with the most prestige points wins.
