About this board game

American Rails is a 3–5-player board game about managing stocks and bonds in six fictional railroad companies, with games lasting around 90 minutes. Set in the United States east of the Mississippi, it challenges players to turn careful planning and ruthless negotiation into the greatest fortune.

Each player takes the role of a wealthy capitalist overseeing a portfolio of railroad investments. The aim is to increase the value of those holdings, reap the profits, and finish the game with more money than anyone else. The player with the most money becomes the nation’s first railroad baron.

This is a luckless train game, placing the focus on decisions, timing, and interaction among the players. Turn order is variable and player-controlled, making the order in which actions unfold an important part of the struggle for advantage.

  • Six fictional railroad companies provide the foundation for each player’s portfolio.
  • Player-controlled variable turn order adds another layer of planning and negotiation.
  • City dilution creates a distinctive strategic consideration.
  • Variable setups help give every game a different shape.

These features give American Rails considerable replayability while keeping the competition sharply focused on wealth and railroad value. Players must weigh their holdings, respond to changing opportunities, and negotiate their way toward the strongest final position.

Inspired by John Bohrer’s Chicago Express and the Historic Railroads System from Winsome Games, American Rails presents a cutthroat contest for control of railroad fortunes. Originally released in 2009, it is designed for players who enjoy direct competition, economic planning, and strategic negotiation.
