About this board game
Anno Domini: Wort Schrift Buch is a 2–8 player historical card game that takes about 30 minutes to play. It challenges players to arrange events in chronological order while relying on deduction, instinct, and a willingness to bluff.
The set contains 340 cards. Each card describes a historical event on one side and gives the year—or sometimes the exact date—on the other. Players receive nine cards each, or fewer for a shorter game, and may look only at the descriptions.
On a turn, a player adds one card to the timeline, trying to place it correctly among the cards already played. Instead of adding a card, the next player may challenge the sequence and claim that the order is wrong. All cards are then revealed to check the dates.
- If the timeline is correct, the doubting player takes two cards and misses their next turn.
- If the timeline is incorrect, the previous player takes three cards.
- The first player to get rid of all their cards wins.
Knowledge helps, but bluffing is just as important. Many events are obscure or difficult to date precisely, creating plenty of surprises and making the game about social judgment as much as historical expertise. It is designed as an enjoyable group experience where players may learn something along the way.
Wort Schrift Buch focuses on events connected with writing, printing, and the history of popular phrases. Like other Anno Domini editions, it can be played on its own or combined with some or all of the other sets. There is no English edition, but it can help improve existing German skills—or provide a reason to start learning German.
