About this board game

Antarctica is a 2–4 player board game released in 2015, with an approximate play time of 90 minutes. Set in a distant future shaped by rising sea levels and increased resource consumption, it challenges players to develop research centers and mine resources in the Antarctic—officially, of course, for research purposes only.

The Antarctic setting is governed by an unusual celestial rhythm: the sun orbits Antarctica counter-clockwise. As it shines on ships, it determines turn order and gives players opportunities to advance their plans. Each ship the sun thaws moves on for scientific progress, creating the framework for when actions become available.

When the sun shines on one of your ships, you may choose from several important activities. These options let you expand your presence, improve your scientific operation, and shape your route toward the end-game scoring.

  • Erect buildings and develop research centers
  • Recruit scientists and place your growing workforce
  • Build additional ships
  • Mine resources for research purposes
  • Conduct scientific research

In Antarctica, victory points are awarded at the end of the game for all kinds of majorities. Your success depends on which areas of the Antarctic you develop and where your efforts give you the strongest presence. The game ends when all buildings have been erected or when one player places their last scientist.

With its counter-clockwise sun, evolving ship movement, and competition for majority scoring, Antarctica presents a distinctive vision of future polar research. Will your consort be the one that gains a fortune—or does the most to rescue mankind?
