About this board game

Athens & Sparta is a strategic two-player block game of the Peloponnesian War, played over approximately 180 minutes and covering the conflict from 431 BC to 404 BC.

One player leads the wealthy, seafaring Athenians, whose strength lies in their superior wealth and naval power. The other commands the powerful armies of Sparta, a militaristic rival whose eventual victory brought the Golden Age of Greece to an end.

The war is fought across the Greek landscape, where important city-states become the focus of a bitter contest. The central objective is to control these key locations while gaining insight into why the conflict unfolded as it did.

• Strategic conflict: Direct Athens or Sparta in a struggle shaped by wealth, naval power, and military strength.
• Hidden information: Unit blocks stand with their backs facing the opponent, creating a fog of war.
• Changing strength: Unit values remain visible only to their owner until combat, then rotate as losses reduce their strength.

Because the opponent cannot identify a unit’s type or strength before battle begins, every deployment carries uncertainty. The numbers along the sides of the blocks show each unit’s strength to its owner, with the current value positioned on top.

As combat takes its toll, blocks are rotated so that a lower value faces upward, clearly recording diminished power. This concealed-strength system gives Athens & Sparta a tense strategic character, as both players must weigh what they know against what their opponent may be hiding.

With its focus on the struggle between Athenian naval wealth and Spartan armies, Athens & Sparta presents a concentrated game of historical rivalry, battlefield uncertainty, and control of the city-states that dotted ancient Greece.
