About this board game

Ave Cesar is a city-building card game for 4–7 players, playable in about 60 minutes and released in 2013. Players build a city in honor of Cesar while collecting points through construction, military power, political influence, and actions performed during the game.

The game combines elements reminiscent of San Juan and Citadels. It features two types of cards: characters and buildings. Each building has a cost, victory points, military power, political influence, and sowing capability, giving players several values to consider as they develop their city.

At the beginning of each round, every player secretly chooses a character using a mechanic similar to Citadels. Characters are activated in order, and their abilities can provide different opportunities, including building, gaining cards, stealing from other players, or obtaining victory points.

During the construction phase, players carry out the main sequence of the round:

  • Activate characters in order.
  • Draw two cards.
  • Harvest what buildings provide.
  • Build and/or use the power of the chosen character.

To construct a building, players pay its cost with cards from their hands, following a system similar to San Juan. This hand-based payment system links card collection and construction as players decide how to use the cards they hold.

When the game ends, players add points from their buildings, military power, and political influence to the points earned during play. In Ave Cesar, the player with the most points wins.
