About this board game

Balloon Cup is a two-player game played in about 30 minutes, where rival balloonists compete across a series of short flights to collect colored cubes and earn three trophy cards.

Four landscape cards are arranged in a row, with two plains alternating with two mountains. Each landscape receives between one and four cubes in assorted colors, including gray, blue, green, yellow, and red. Players draw from a hand of eight balloon cards and add cards matching the colors of the cubes on their side of the table.

  • Mountains: Play high-valued balloon cards.
  • Plains: Play low-valued balloon cards.
  • Changing winds: Cunning play may send a card to the opponent’s side, disrupting their plans.
  • Landscape shifts: After a landscape is resolved, it flips from mountain to plain or from plain to mountain and is refilled with cubes.

Once cards have been played on both sides of a landscape, the better balloonist takes the cubes from that card. Five trophy cards, valued from 3 to 7, are placed above the landscapes. As players collect enough cubes of a color, they claim the corresponding trophy card.

Not every cube will be useful immediately, but three otherwise unwanted cubes can be traded for one cube that helps. This exchange can turn surplus colors into a valuable opportunity while the landscapes and their contents keep changing.

With its compact play time and direct two-player competition, Balloon Cup combines color matching, card values, tactical placement, and timing. The first player to earn three trophy cards wins.
