About this board game

Barbarossa: Crimea, 1941-42 is a two-player operational-level wargame about the battles for the Crimean Peninsula during 1941 and 1942, with an average play time of approximately 240 minutes.

The game begins in mid-October 1941, as the German 11th Army enters Crimea, and continues through the fall of Sevastopol in July 1942. Players command forces at division and regiment scale across a map representing five miles per hex, with a detailed Sevastopol inset map using a closer scale.

Built on the East Front Series system, the game features ranged artillery, air units for close support and interdiction, weather, reaction movement, railroad and strategic movement, overruns, combined arms, fortifications, and specialized supply situations. Soviet HQs, retreat or stand orders, amphibious operations, and evacuation decisions add further pressure to each side’s plans.

  • Eight scenarios, including a learning scenario and the combined Crimean Campaign
  • Special naval rules and Soviet amphibious operations
  • Sevastopol fortress combat with German super-heavy artillery, including Dora
  • 740 die-cut counters representing divisions, brigades, artillery, engineers, aircraft, naval units, and more

Scenario objectives range from clearing the Perekop Isthmus and besieging Odessa to the German drives toward Sevastopol and Kerch. Later battles recreate the competing offensives at Kerch and the final German assault on Sevastopol, where every hill, fort, and farmhouse can matter.

Barbarossa: Crimea, 1941-42 challenges both commanders to balance limited troops and supplies across multiple sectors. The German player must consolidate gains and exploit breakthroughs, while the Soviet player uses defensive positions and naval mobility to shift the threat.
