About this board game
Barbarossa: Kiev to Rostov, 1941 is a 1–4 player operational-level wargame, with games lasting about 240 minutes, depicting the battles of the southern wing of the Axis invasion of the Soviet Union.
Set from mid-August through December 1941, the game follows the struggle across Ukraine toward Kharkov and Rostov. Players command forces at a division and regiment scale across maps covering the campaign, with each turn representing two days and each hex representing five miles.
The system is designed for two players or two teams and continues the familiar mechanics of GMT’s East Front Series. German and Soviet forces must balance attacks and defense while dealing with limited troops, supply difficulties, changing weather, and the immense distances of the theater.
- Operational mechanics: artillery, air support, interdiction, reaction movement, railroad and strategic movement, overruns, retreats, and stand orders.
- Specialized forces: rocket and heavy artillery, armored trains, assault guns, engineers, Stukas, Sturmoviks, anti-aircraft guns, NKVD, militia, and more.
- Flexible scenarios: eight scenarios include a learning scenario, focused battles, major campaigns, and the complete Kiev-to-Rostov campaign.
Scenarios range from the Battle of Sumy, a quick contest between German mobility and Soviet cavalry, to the Kiev Pocket, the Sea of Azov, and the drives toward Kharkov and Rostov. The full campaign covers 57 turns and challenges both sides to preserve resources for battles still to come.
With 1120 die-cut counters, four maps, setup cards, charts, and a ten-sided die, Barbarossa: Kiev to Rostov offers a substantial East Front experience. Several scenarios require only one map or less, making the series’ campaigns more accessible when table space is limited.
