About this board game
Beyond Balderdash is a bluffing party game for 2–6 players, with an approximately 45-minute play time. Released in 1993, it expands on the original Balderdash by challenging players to invent convincing answers to unusual prompts.
At the heart of the game is the art of deception. Players create false definitions for obscure words, then try to persuade their opponents that their inventions are genuine. The real answer is revealed alongside the bluffs, and it may be even more outrageous than anything the players imagined.
Beyond Balderdash broadens the formula with several additional categories:
- Movies: make up a plot for the film named on the card.
- Dates: explain what happened on a particular date.
- People: say what the named person did.
- Initials: invent what the initials stand for.
These categories give the game a wide range of prompts, from historical significance to imaginary film stories and invented expansions of initials. Every answer creates another opportunity for a well-crafted bluff—or an amusing surprise when the authentic response is revealed.
The game is also distinct from the UK version of Absolute Balderdash, which uses different questions and includes a Law category instead of Dates. Canadian and Australian versions of Absolute Balderdash use the Date category in place of Law. By at least 2003, the Absolute and Beyond variations had been merged into the game Balderdash, while the standard five-category edition used Laws instead of Dates.
With its mix of wordplay, invention, and unexpected facts, Beyond Balderdash turns almost any prompt into a contest of creativity and credibility.
