About this board game

Beyond Normandy: The British Advance, 1944 is a two-player Panzer Grenadier game with an approximately 180-minute playing time, covering British operations in Normandy from late June to mid-July 1944.

After the Allied landings, British forces sought to expand the beachhead, secure Caen, and tie down German mobile formations while American forces captured Cherbourg. Following an unsuccessful direct attack on Caen, Operation EPSOM attempted to outflank the city through maneuver across the fields and hedgerows west of it.

The game portrays the clash between British divisions entering combat and the experienced SS and Wehrmacht panzer and infantry formations sent to oppose them. British pressure drew German armored forces into the fighting, helping tie them down and deplete them before a coordinated German offensive could be launched.

Three battlefield maps depict the Normandy terrain at 200 meters per hex. They include individual bridges, villages, tracks, roads, hedgerows, and church steeples, creating a detailed setting for the game’s tactical engagements.

  • 583 playing pieces represent leaders, infantry and tank platoons, and artillery batteries.
  • British forces include Churchill, Cromwell, Firefly, Crocodile, and AVRE tanks.
  • German forces include tough SS grenadiers, Panther tanks, and panzer and infantry formations.
  • The game contains 39 scenarios plus five “super” scenarios combining multiple scenarios into larger operational battles.

Beyond Normandy offers a focused look at the British advance and the German reactions that shaped the fighting around Caen. It is part of the Panzer Grenadier series and combines historical forces, distinctive Normandy terrain, and a substantial scenario selection.
