About this board game
Bitter End: Attack to Budapest, 1945 is an operational-level World War II simulation for 1–2 players, with a playing time of about 240 minutes. Set in Hungary during January 1945, it recreates the German attempts to relieve Budapest, where 79,000 Axis troops are surrounded by Soviet forces.
The campaign begins on January 1, as the German IV SS and III Panzer Corps launch a surprise attack. The initial offensive pushes toward the encircled capital but stalls in difficult terrain west of the city. On January 18, the German attack shifts toward the south-west, while Soviet reinforcements arrive and gradually bring the offensive to a halt.
Players explore this desperate situation at a detailed operational scale. Each game turn represents one day, each hex covers 2 miles (3.2 kilometers), and units range from battalions to brigades. The historical outcome is known, but Bitter End invites players to test whether different decisions could change the course of the relief effort.
- Two full-color 22 × 34-inch mapsheets
- 456 double-sided counters representing the game’s forces
- Historical setup charts, organizational charts, and player aid cards
- Rules covering a campaign lasting seven weeks of combat
Hitler’s objective was not simply to rescue the garrison, but to recapture and retain Budapest. The defenders were ordered to hold their positions and await relief, creating a compelling strategic dilemma: had the relieving forces come within a few miles of the city, a breakout might have been attempted.
With medium complexity and medium solitaire suitability, Bitter End offers a focused examination of a doomed offensive and its possible alternatives. Players can also investigate several viable historical alternatives, including forces that might have been available to the commanders.
