About this board game

Bosworth is a chess variant for 2–4 players with an approximate play time of 60 minutes. It uses familiar chess pieces and movement as the foundation, while adding random draws, field camps, and special rules for pawns and kings.

Each player begins with four pawns in their area along the edge of the board, known as a field camp. The remaining chess pieces are represented by disks and placed in a draw pile. Each player also draws four pieces to form a hand, creating an uncertain supply of potential reinforcements.

On every turn, a player must complete three key actions:

  • Move or capture with one piece.
  • Fill empty spaces in the field camp with pieces from the hand.
  • Draw pieces until the hand contains four pieces again.

Most pieces move and capture exactly as they do in chess, making the game immediately recognizable to chess players. Pawns are different: they can move sideways and capture in any diagonal direction. Kings also have an unusual defensive option, as they can capture their own pieces to escape check.

The objective remains distinctly chess-like: checkmate all opposing kings. However, the draw pile and limited hand mean that the pieces available to develop can change throughout the game, adding a layer of uncertainty to tactical planning. Players must balance immediate movement and captures with the need to populate their field camp.

Released in 1998, Bosworth offers a compact reworking of chess for competitive multiplayer sessions. It is also listed for real-time online play through GameTable Online.
