About this board game

Breakthru is a two-player strategy game from 1965, designed for an approximately 15-minute contest between unequal fleets with completely different objectives.

Part of the 3M Bookshelf Series, Breakthru is a modern member of the Hnefatafl family of games. One player commands the gold fleet: a large flagship supported by 12 escorts. The gold player must evade capture while attempting to break through the opposing blockade and escort the flagship to safety.

The other player commands the silver fleet. Their goal is to establish an impenetrable blockade, outmaneuver the gold fleet, and destroy its escorts. Once the opportunity arises, the silver player must capture the flagship to win the game.

  • Players: 2
  • Playing time: approximately 15 minutes
  • Gold objective: protect the flagship and break through to safety
  • Silver objective: blockade the opposing fleet and capture the flagship

With unequal forces and contrasting goals, every game of Breakthru centers on the tension between escape and containment. The gold fleet must press forward without allowing its flagship to be captured, while the silver fleet works to close off routes and eliminate the escorts that protect it.

This compact design creates a focused strategic contest in which both sides approach the same fleet conflict from a different perspective. Whether you prefer the challenge of a daring breakthrough or the careful construction of a blockade, Breakthru offers a concise, head-to-head battle shaped by asymmetric objectives.
