About this board game

Buccaneer is a board game for 2–6 players, with a play time of about 90 minutes. Released in 1938, it challenges players to collect treasure worth a total of 20 points.

Players can pursue their treasure goal in three distinct ways. Sail to Treasure Island and turn up Chance cards, visit other ports to trade, or attack other ships while at sea. Each route offers a different way to build a valuable collection.

  • Treasure Island: Sail there and reveal Chance cards.
  • Trading: Visit other ports and exchange goods for treasure.
  • Attacks at sea: Confront other ships to obtain treasure.

One of Buccaneer’s most notable features is its treasure. The diamonds, rubies, and pearls are represented by small jewel-like pieces, giving the game a memorable physical presence on the table.

The card system is another standout element. Cards control both ship movement and combat, creating a clever mechanism that was years ahead of its time. Movement and encounters are therefore closely connected to the cards players use.

With its combination of sailing, trading, treasure hunting, and ship attacks, Buccaneer presents a focused race toward a 20-point collection. Its distinctive jewel pieces and innovative card mechanics help explain the game’s enduring interest among classic board game enthusiasts.
