About this board game

Budapest ’45 is a two-player simulation of the fighting in and around Hungary’s capital during January 1945, designed for a playing time of approximately 120 minutes. The game is played over 14 turns and focuses on the struggle for control of Budapest.

Victory can come in two ways. A player may achieve a political victory by gaining control of Budapest, or win on points awarded for the destruction of opposing units.

This creates a clear contrast between the game’s central political objective and its point-based victory condition. Whether the contest ends through control of the capital or through accumulated points, the result is determined by the opposing forces’ success during the scenario.

The published game provides the materials needed to play this historical simulation, including a large mapsheet, player aids, rules, and a set of playing counters.

  • 16 pages of rules
  • 22 × 34 inch mapsheet
  • Two player aid cards
  • 165 counters

With its fixed 14-turn length, Budapest ’45 offers a defined framework for the January 1945 conflict. Its combination of a political victory based on Budapest and a points victory based on destroyed opposing units gives the game two stated ways to determine the winner.
