In 49 B.C., Rome is in turmoil. The First Triumvirate has disintegrated, armed mobs rule the streets, and the Senate and the People face a choice between Gnaeus Pompeius Magno—Pompey the Great—and Caius Julius Caesar, the ambitious conqueror of Gaul.

The crisis reaches the Rubicon, where Caesar and his XIII Legion receive word of the stalemate. From this moment, the game follows the conflict between two powerful political and military figures as the civil wars unfold across several regions of the ancient world.
