About this board game

Caligula is a political game for 2–5 players that plays in about 60 minutes, set in Imperial Rome in 41 AD. The emperor has gone too far, and powerful figures must decide when to act against him—and how to profit while rescuing the Republic.

Players take on the roles of the true powers behind Roman politics: the people holding the knives. Send your legates throughout the empire to advance personal plans, pursue valuable opportunities, and build the position you need for the struggle ahead.

Success depends on more than simply making plans. Keep a wary eye on rival players and make them pay dearly for their gains. Marshal your resources with care, watch the shifting political situation, and wait for the right moment to strike.

  • Navigate treacherous political struggles in Imperial Rome.
  • Send legates throughout the empire to further your plans.
  • Monitor rivals and turn their gains into costly setbacks.
  • Secure your favorite candidate for the throne and pursue Rome’s wealth and glory.

The central struggle reaches its climax when players move to secure their preferred successor. Whoever can guide a favorite onto the throne stands to claim the wealth and glory of Rome, while rivals risk being banished from the halls of power.

Designed by Italian game designer Pierluca Zizzi, Caligula was the first game from its designer and the sixth title from publisher Post Scriptum. With its blend of plots, resources, rivalries, and ambition, it asks whether you have the savvy to survive the politics of the Eternal City—or whether your opponents will act first.
