About this expansion
Carcassonne: The Messengers is a small expansion for 2–6 players, released in 2012, that adds message tiles and a second scoring meeple to Carcassonne.
At the start of the game, each player places an additional meeple on the score board. Whenever that player scores points, they choose which of their two scoring meeples to advance. If a meeple lands on a dark space of the score track—such as 0, 5, or 10—and its owner is the active player, that player draws the top message tile.
Each message offers a choice: take the action shown on the tile or score two points. The available actions create several ways to benefit from your position in the game:
- Score your smallest road, city, or cloister as if the game had ended, without moving the meeple in place.
- Score two points for each banner in a city you occupy or for each of your knights.
- Score three points for each of your farmers.
- Draw and play an additional tile.
- Score one follower and return it to your supply.
After resolving a message, place its tile on the bottom of the message stack. This keeps the messages circulating while giving each player meaningful decisions whenever a scoring meeple reaches a dark space.
At the end of the game, add the scores represented by your two scoring meeples and place one meeple on that combined total. Then complete final scoring as usual, with no further messages earned. Carcassonne: The Messengers adds a compact layer of timing, choice, and extra scoring opportunities to the Carcassonne series.
