About this board game

Cascadero is a strategic tile-placement game for 2–4 players, with games lasting around 60 minutes. In this 2024 release from acclaimed designer Reiner Knizia, players help El Cascadero reunite a shattered kingdom by sending envoys to divided towns.

Ministers visit towns by placing their envoys adjacent to them. However, towns distrust lone envoys: a newly placed envoy triggers town scoring only when it joins an established group or carries an official seal from El Cascadero. Towns with Royal Messengers or a history of envoy visits are even more valuable, creating opportunities for bigger successes.

Every town is associated with one of four responsibilities: Farming, Crafting, Mining, or Markets. When you trigger a town’s scoring, you advance along its matching success column and collect bonuses along the way. These rewards can include:

  • Victory points
  • Progress on any success column
  • An official seal
  • Repositioning an envoy
  • An additional turn

Careful timing can create a cascading combo of bonuses, but every decision involves a strategic trade-off. Build long chains of envoys to pursue synergies and objectives, or establish smaller, separate groups to trigger town scoring at precisely the right moment. Victory points matter, but they will not qualify you for victory unless you also reach the end of your appointed success column.

Cascadero offers replayability through emergent player interaction, variable board and tile setups, and an advanced mode featuring traveling heralds. The game ends when a player reaches 50 victory points or must place a tile but has none left. Among the players who completed their success column, the player with the most victory points wins.
