About this board game
Castelnuovo 1539: Come whenever you dare! is a two-player siege game lasting around 90 minutes, set during the desperate defense of Castelnuovo in 1539.
After the Holy League captured the town in 1538, fourteen companies of Spanish infantry—around 3,500 soldiers—were stationed there. The following summer, an Ottoman force of 54,000 troops and a fleet of 200 ships arrived. With Venice having left the League, no naval relief was possible, and the defenders answered Jareidin Barbarossa’s offer of surrender with a defiant challenge: “Come whenever you want.”
In the game, the Ottoman player must capture the fortress’s key positions or eliminate all Spanish forces. The Spanish player cannot ultimately avoid defeat, but must ensure that the Ottoman victory comes at an extremely high cost. Every assault, bombardment, and defensive preparation matters in this battle of attrition.
- Hidden unit identities: vertical wooden pieces with stickers prevent players from seeing the opposing unit types.
- Fortified battlefield: the board is divided into areas containing elements such as cannon batteries, walls, bastions, and trenches.
- Dice and cards: six-sided dice resolve confrontations, while each side’s deck provides orders, combat improvements, trench-building, and special events.
Manage your army carefully, exploit the fortifications, and decide when to commit forces to combat. Castelnuovo 1539 presents a historical struggle in which the fortress will eventually fall—but the decisive question is how much the Ottoman army must pay for taking it.
