About this expansion
Knightmare Chess is a card-enhanced game of standard Chess for 2 players, with an approximate play time of 60 minutes.
Instead of relying only on the usual moves, players use cards to add a new element of unpredictability to the game. Cards may be played before or after a turn, and some can be played instead of a turn, creating a range of possible effects during the match.
Some cards influence only a single move, while others alter the entire game. This gives Knightmare Chess a flexible structure in which players can decide how much card-driven change to introduce and how to shape their decks.
- Point-valued cards: Every card has an assigned point value.
- Custom decks: Build decks using an agreed point total.
- Handicap options: The better player can receive fewer powerful cards.
- Multiple variants: The rules include several ways to play.
The point system supports both agreed deck construction and handicapped matches, allowing the players to set the balance before the game begins. The included variants offer additional approaches to combining cards with the familiar framework of Chess.
Released in 1994, the game also integrates with Knightmare Chess 2. Card availability differs by edition: the French First Edition contains 72 cards, while the German First Edition contains 51 cards.
