About this board game
Clash of Empires: The Battle for France 1914 is a 1986 board-wargame simulation for 2–3 players, with an approximate playing time of 120 minutes. It recreates the beginning of the Great War, primarily as a contest between French and German forces.
In the standard two-player game, one player controls the French and the other commands the Germans. A third player may join to control British forces, adding another participant to the conflict without changing the game’s open-ended structure.
The game continues until one side fulfills its victory conditions or the fighting reaches a stalemate. The German player must capture Paris and cut it off from supply for two complete turns. The French player instead seeks to capture two German supply centres.
- German victory: Capture Paris and keep it cut off from supply for two complete turns.
- French victory: Capture two German supply centres.
- Stalemate: Either player may declare one if the game lasts longer than 12 turns.
If a stalemate is declared, the result can be assessed as a marginal victory based on city control and strength losses. This gives a prolonged game an additional way to determine which side has performed better, even when neither player has achieved the main victory conditions.
With its focused setting, asymmetric objectives, and emphasis on supply and control, Clash of Empires: The Battle for France 1914 offers a compact simulation of the opening phase of the Great War. Its open-ended conclusion lets the conflict continue until a clear victory or an extended deadlock decides the outcome.
