About this board game
Cranium Cariboo is a treasure-hunt game for 2–4 players, ages 3–6, with a playing time of about 20 minutes. Designed to help young children learn letters, numbers and counting, colors, and shapes, it combines simple matching with an exciting shared goal.
On each turn, a player draws a card and looks for a treasure-hunt door with a matching trait. The card may direct attention to a color, a number of objects, or another feature represented on the doors. Players then open the selected door to continue the search.
- Draw a card and identify its matching trait.
- Open the corresponding treasure-hunt door.
- Look for a hidden ball and place it in the tide pool when found.
- Find all six balls to open the treasure chest.
The central challenge is easy to follow: keep matching cards to doors while searching for the hidden balls. Every discovery brings the group closer to opening the treasure chest, giving Cranium Cariboo a cooperative structure in which everyone wins when all six balls have been found.
If a cooperative victory is not preferred, the game also includes scoring rules. This provides an alternative way to play while keeping the same card-matching and treasure-hunt activities at the center.
Released in 1998, Cranium Cariboo offers young players a playful way to practice early learning concepts through colors, shapes, letters, and counting. The game was reimplemented by Cariboo Island.
